The Cheese Cover(dale) Story!

Cheese steeped in over 100 years of history is revived!

Family-run Cryer & Stott Cheesemongers have revived the famous Coverdale cheese to its original recipe. Coverdale cheese has over 100 years of history dating back to 1912.

Coverdale is a dale set in the idyllic Yorkshire Dales North Yorkshire & the home of the newly revived Coverdale cheese.

Brief History

Alfred Rowntree opened the first dairy in 1906 in Masham, well known for producing the Wensleydale Blue and Wensleydale. Then in 1912, they moved to the Coverham Dairy and this is where the Coverdale originated. In the 1920s the Coverdale died out; Coverham Dairy eventually ended up in the hands of the Milk Marketing Board which in 1987 took the decision to close it down despite having recently upgraded the facility. Seven members of staff put their redundancy money together and started Fountains Dairy Products Ltd at Kirkby Malzeard near Ripon. One of them, Les Lambert had decided as part of their policy they wanted to take cheesemaking back to their grassroots, as well as recreating some old classics, one being Coverdale. Later bought by Wensleydale Dairy in 2000 the creamery continued to make the cheese until the line was discontinued in early 2020.

Natural Rind Coverdale

Recognising demand from their customers, family-run cheesemongers Cryer & Stott decided to revive Coverdale and make it on a smaller scale with their own innovative yet traditional twist! Working closely with the small artisan dairy Home Farmer they have produced an unpasteurised 6-week-old crumbly cheese. Coverdale is clothbound with an aesthetically pleasing natural rind. The mould rind Coverdale has a spongy texture, slightly crumbly with a subtle tang. A perfect all-rounder on a cheeseboard, deli counter & amazing on a wedding cake.

Quotes

Jemma Ladwitch Business Development Manager of Cryer & Stott Cheesemongers said ‘’We could not let this amazing cheese steeping in over 100 years of history disappear, we had to do something about it. Home Farmer is a fairly new artisan dairy based in the heart of the dales with their own herd of cows, they were the perfect choice to make the newly revived authentic Coverdale for us’’.

Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire James Mason said “It’s brilliant news that we’ll all still be able to enjoy this historical cheese thanks to Cryer and Stott. Welcome to Yorkshire is all about celebrating our county’s amazing heritage while focusing on a successful future and the dedication of small artisan dairy Home Farmer is helping us do just that. We’re incredibly proud of the wonderful fresh produce we have in the county and this new version of the classic Coverdale cheese is another great addition.”

Cryer & Stott launched the newly revived Coverdale at the Welcome to Yorkshire Ian Woosnam Senior Classic Golf Tournament last week & the cheese received rave reviews from some famous faces including footballer Robbie Fowler & cricketer Ryan Sidebottom.

Coverdale is being made in small batches of twenty every 2 weeks & already has a waiting list. We can supply restaurants & retail shops around Yorkshire.
